Origin and history

The house located 57 rue Albert-Barraud in Bordeaux is a rectangular building built during the second half of the 18th century. It is distinguished by its typical decoration of Bordeaux architecture of the last third of this century, while Romance with the tradition of local urban houses. Its façade, of one floor and composed of four spans of rectangular bays, marks an architectural originality notable for the period. The architect Laclotte is the master architect attested.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 12 March 2007, this house also has a literary dimension: it was inhabited and described by the American writer Washington Irving. The latter, known for his travel accounts, helped to immortalize this place in his writings. The official protection concerns the entire building (cadastre LB 174), emphasizing its heritage importance.

The location of the house, in the historic area of Bordeaux, reflects the city's urban dynamism in the 18th century, when maritime commerce and the enrichment of local elites stimulated the construction of private hotels and bourgeois houses.
