Entrance gate and door of the stair turret: inscription by order of 22 March 1934
Origin and history
The house located at 11 rue Haute in Gueberschwihr, in the Haut-Rhin, is an emblematic building of the first quarter of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is distinguished by its Alsatian architecture, with a wall-butter-walled house on street, a two-arch entrance passage, and a helical silt staircase turret. The cellar on the ground floor and the dependencies rebuilt in the 20th century complete this historic complex.
Several architectural elements bear engraved dates: the first arc of the entrance passage is dated 1573, the second of 1604, while the door of the staircase turret is dated 1605. A wooden post of the cellar is marked of the year 1689, and a laundry is dated 1844. These details attest to the successive transformations of the building throughout the centuries.
Classified as a historic monument since 1934, this house illustrates the evolution of Alsatian habitat between Renaissance and modern times. Its inscription specifically concerns the entrance gate and the door of the stair turret, remarkable elements by their style and state of preservation. The outbuildings, although rebuilt, incorporate ancient bays, reflecting the concern to preserve the local heritage.
