Origin and history
The house at 2, rue de la Poterne in Rouffach (High Rhine) is an emblematic building of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its architecture combines a ground floor and a first stone floor, while the second floor, in corbellation, is built of wooden panels. The windows on the last level feature prominent chambranles decorated with sculptures depicting heads of women and animals, and a sculpted cornel post of an enraged atlante. These decorative elements, as well as the remains of ancient openings on the first floor, testify to its architectural evolution.
An inscription engraved on a stone, dated 1362, was reported on the facade, but experts, like Walter, believe that it would actually come from the neighbouring house (No. 4), having sheltered the Elephant corporation. The house was restored in 1957, during which windows were opened at all levels and some elements of the second-floor rooms replaced. This work made it possible to better reveal its original characteristics.
Classified as a historic monument by decree of 13 June 1929 for its facades and roofs, this house illustrates the Alsatian civil heritage of modern times. Its state of conservation and its architectural details make it a representative example of the bourgeois or artisanal dwellings of Rouffach, a city marked by its medieval and Renaissance history. Official protection underlines its importance in the local urban landscape, alongside other classified monuments of the municipality.
