Origin and history

This house located in Puy-en-Velay, built in the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, perfectly illustrates the civil architecture of this period. Its facade, which remains intact, as well as its staircase with its iron ramp, reflect the elegant and sober style of the Enlightenment century. These elements, typical of bourgeois houses, bear witness to a refined artisanal know-how, adapted to the tastes of the aristocracy and the rising bourgeoisie.

The interior of this house is particularly remarkable, made up of ironwork, woodwork and stucco. These ornaments, characteristic of the late eighteenth century, suggest the intervention of an artist or specialized workshops, active in the region. These same craftsmen probably contributed to the decoration of many castles and private hotels of the time, thus marking the local architectural landscape with a coherent artistic footprint.

Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 17 July 1972, this house is protected for its facade, roof, as well as for the ironwork of its staircase and woodwork of its first floor living room. These protections underline the heritage importance of these elements, representative of an architectural and artistic heritage preserved in spite of centuries.
