Origin and history

The Maison des Rousson is an emblematic monument of Puy-en-Velay in the Haute-Loire department. Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its entrance door adorned with a salient architrave enclosure and ionic pilasters, typical of Renaissance architecture. This architectural detail, as well as its small panel carpentry, bears witness to the craftsmanship of the period and the social status of its owners.

The gate on street, including its vantals, was registered as historic monuments by order of 26 March 1934. This protection highlights the heritage value of the building, although the available information does not specify the complete history of its occupants or its construction. The building is located at 24 rue des Farges, an address referenced in the Mérimée base of the Ministry of Culture.

In the 16th century, Le Puy-en-Velay was a dynamic city, marked by its religious and commercial role in Auvergne. The houses of this period often reflected the prosperity of bourgeois or merchant families, as evidenced by the quality of the decorations of this door. These houses served both as a dwelling and a place of social representation, integrated into a dense urban fabric and organized around artisanal and religious activities.
