Echauguette : inscription by order of 1 February 1929

Origin and history

The house at 3 rue Claude-Gillot in Langres is a 16th-century civil building, representative of Renaissance domestic architecture. Its scald, a characteristic defensive and decorative element, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 1 February 1929. This type of construction reflects the evolution of urban dwellings at this time, combining functionality and aesthetics.

Langres, a fortified town of Haute-Marne, experienced a boom in the 16th century due to its strategic and commercial role in eastern France. Bourgeois houses, like this one, testify to the relative prosperity of some inhabitants, often merchants or artisans. Their presence in the urban fabric also illustrates the social and economic organization of the city, where civil architecture stood alongside religious and military buildings.

The protection of the ecauguette in 1929 underscores the heritage interest of these Renaissance remains in Champagne-Ardenne.
