J. Marcoul - Lord of Montmagner House commander in 1360.

Origin and history

The house of Arnac-la-Poste is a 14th century historical monument built in 1360 by J. Marcoul, lord of Montmagner. This rural complex consists of a main house body, accompanied by a circular tower to the south, supported by a massive foothill. A small rectangular opening, practiced in this foothill, illuminates the interior staircase, while a wooden staircase serves the floors. This type of construction reflects the defensive and residential architecture of the local lords at that time.

The house is flanked, to the west and east, by a barn and a secondary building, added later. The stair turret, a remarkable element of the site, was classified by order of 1 June 1973. This monument illustrates the evolution of medieval rural complexes, combining agricultural functions and seigneurial habitat. The approximate location, noted as "a priori satisfactory", is located at Montmagner, near Arnac-la-Poste.

The historical context of the region, marked by the Hundred Years' War in the 14th century, explains the defensive nature of certain buildings. Local lords, like J. Marcoul, played a central role in social and economic organization, protecting their lands while developing agricultural activities. This monument bears witness to the rural life and power relations of the period in Limousin.
