Origin and history
The house of Richelieu is part of an ambitious urban project launched in the 17th century. The cardinal of Richelieu, born in this village, decided to transform him into a model city. The plans were entrusted to Jacques Lemercier, renowned architect, who drew a regular line: symmetrical streets, ditches, ramparts and monumental gates. This project reflected the desire for modernity and architectural control typical of the time.
The town of Richelieu, with its aligned houses and geometric organization, became an example of planned urban planning under the Old Regime. The house at 29 Grande Rue, whose facade and roof were inscribed in the Historic Monuments in 1932, illustrates this preserved architectural heritage. Its style integrates into the coherent set desired by the cardinal, combining functionality and classical aesthetics.
Today, this house bears witness to Richelieu's urban heritage, where each element – from dwellings to fortifications – was designed to serve a political and social vision. The protection of its façade in 1932 underlines its importance in this unique urban landscape, marked by the influence of one of Louis XIII's most powerful ministers.
