Origin and history
The house of Richelieu is part of an ambitious urban project launched by Cardinal Richelieu. The latter transformed his native village into a new city, whose plans were designed by architect Jacques Lemercier, known for his work on the castle. The geometric layout, with its ditches, ramparts and symmetrical streets, reflects a desire for modernity and order, typical of the 17th century's classic urban planning.
The city of Richelieu, with its aligned houses and monumental gates, embodies the ideal of rationality and spatial control advocated by its founder. The protected house, whose facade and roof have been inscribed since 1932, bears witness to this architectural harmony. Its location on the Place du Marché, the economic and social heart of the city, highlights its role in the daily life of the time.
The inscription of the Historical Monuments in 1932 preserved this example of civil architecture in the Great Century. Although the details of its original use or its occupants are lacking, its integration into the urban fabric designed by Lemercier makes it a key element of the rich heritage, linked to the cardinal's political and cultural heritage.
