Origin and history

The house of Richelieu is part of an urban complex designed by Cardinal Richelieu, who transformed his native village into a planned city. The plans were drawn up by architect Jacques Lemercier, known for his work on the Château de Richelieu. This ambitious project includes ditches, a fortified enclosure, monumental doors and a network of symmetrical streets lined with aligned houses.

The city of Richelieu, with its orderly architecture, reflects the cardinal's desire to create a model city, combining classical aesthetics and functionality. The facades and roofs of some houses, including the Place du Marché, were protected in 1932 for their heritage value. This urban setting, marked by geometric rigor, bears witness to the influence of the urbanist ideas of the time.

The precise address of this house, 29 Place du Marché, is referenced in the Mérimée base. Although the GPS location is approximate, it allows to situate the monument in the department of Indre-et-Loire, in the region Centre-Val de Loire. The city, classified among the Historical Monuments, thus preserves the traces of an architectural heritage linked to one of the major figures of French history.
