Cardinal de Richelieu - Urban project sponsor Initiator of the new city.

Origin and history

The house of Richelieu is part of an ambitious urban project launched in the 17th century. The cardinal of Richelieu, born in the original village, decided to transform him into an ideal city. The plans were entrusted to Jacques Lemercier, a renowned architect, who designed a geometrical layout: symmetrical streets, ditches, ramparts and monumental doors frame houses aligned in a strict order.

This house, whose facade and roof have been protected since 1932, illustrates the architectural harmony sought by Richelieu. The city, conceived as a symbol of power and modernity, reflects the urban principles of the classical era. The buildings, uniform and ordered, were to embody the authority of the cardinal and the rationality of his political project.

The precise address, 5 place of the Religious, confirms its integration into the historical heart of the city. Although the details of its original use are lacking, its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments underlines its role in the architectural heritage of the new city. The location, noted as 'passable' in databases, recalls the conservation challenges of old urban complexes.
