Origin and history

The house of Richelieu is part of an ambitious urban project launched by Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century. Born in this village, he wanted to make it a model city, entrusting the plans to the architect Jacques Lemercier, known for his work at the castle. The regular route, with ditches, ramparts and symmetrical streets, reflects this desire for modernity and order, typical of the emerging classical urbanism.

The building is part of a coherent architectural ensemble, where each house was aligned according to strict rules to harmonize public space. The facade and roof of this house were protected as early as 1932 by an inscription to the Historic Monuments, highlighting their heritage value. This unique urban project illustrates the influence of the great lords on land use under the Old Regime.

Today, the place of the Religious, where the house is located, recalls the religious and social importance of Richelieu. The Insee code (37196) and the precise address (20 place des Religieuses) attest to its anchoring in the Indre-et-Loire department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Localization, noted as "passible" (5/10), invites further research to refine its historical geolocation.
