Door lintel: inscription by order of 11 March 1935
Origin and history
The house in Deols, Indre, is distinguished by a Gallo-Roman monolithic lintel, integrated into its construction. This sculpted stone lintel features a moulded pediment in the centre, framed by shovels decorated with symmetrical volutes. These decorative motifs, typical of Gallo-Roman art, suggest an ancient origin, although their initial context remains unknown. The re-use of this material in a later home reflects the practices of recovery that have been common over the centuries.
The lintel has been protected since 1935 by an inscription under the Historic Monuments, highlighting its heritage value. The sculptures, in relief on a field bordered by a deep bevel, include stylized plant elements, such as a central spur crowned with volutes. These artistic details, though fragmentary, offer a rare example of Gallo-Roman architectural decoration preserved in situ in the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The location of the house, at 31 rue du Pont-Perrin, corresponds to a historical area of Deols, a town linked to the former Gallo-Roman city of Deols. The lack of details about the exact dating of the lintel or the history of the house itself limits the understanding of its evolution, but its ranking highlights the importance of ancient remains in the local heritage.
