Origin and history

The house Joseph-Joubert is an 18th-century house located in Villeneuve-sur-Yonne, in the department of Yonne (Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). It is located on rue Joubert (formerly rue du Pont), between the church Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption and the bridge Saint-Nicolas, crossing the Yonne. This place is emblematic of local heritage, marked by its architecture and literary history.

After his marriage to Victoire Moreau in 1793, philosopher Joseph Joubert settled in this house, owned by his in-laws. He shared his life there between Paris and Villeneuve-sur-Yonne until his death in 1824. The residence also houses figures such as Chateaubriand and Pauline de Beaumont. In 1793, Rue du Pont was renamed Rue Joubert in his honour, and the house took its present name.

Classified as a historical monument on 7 March 1990, the house is the object of restorations carried out with the DRAC Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. In November 2025, she obtained the label Maisons des Illustres from the Ministry of Culture and opened to the public. Today, it is managed by a private company and offers visits, as indicated on its official website.

The building, identified under reference AE 813 at the cadastre, is located at 18 Joseph-Joubert Street (or 12 according to GPS sources). Its designation as historic monuments in 1990 underscores its heritage importance, linked to both its 18th century architecture and its literary history.
