Origin and history
The house on Rue du Commerce, one of the oldest in Lons-le-Saunier, embodies 17th and 18th century civil architecture. Its construction began in the late 16th or early 17th century, as evidenced by the gallery of the second courtyard. This monument is distinguished by its three building bodies, including an old space dedicated to stables and barn, connected by a gallery on a floor.
In 1707 François Pajot, then mayor of Lons-le-Saunier, undertook major redevelopments. The interior decorations, including the ironwork of the 1707 stairway, as well as the facades and roofs, reflect this period of transformation. The house is partially classified as a Historic Monument in 1996 and 2003, protecting its most emblematic elements such as the staircase and arcade gallery.
The street of Commerce, with its characteristic arcades, illustrates the ancient urbanism of the city. This monument, both bourgeois residence and witness to local history, combines practical functions (housing, storage) and aesthetics (decades, galleries). Its registration and classification underline its heritage value in the Jura.
