Origin and history

This house, located in Lons-le-Saunier, in the Jura department, is a building rebuilt in 1723. It is distinguished by the preservation of an older wooden staircase, considered the oldest in the city. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of the early eighteenth century, a period marked by a gradual urban reconstruction after the disturbances of the previous centuries.

The building was partially protected by an order of 4 July 1996, covering its facades, roofs and stairway in the courtyard. Its exact address, 50 rue du Commerce and 25 rue Tamisier, places the building in the heart of the historic urban fabric of Lons-le-Saunier. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair, reflecting the limitations of the available data.

At the time of its construction, Lons-le-Saunier was a developing city, known for its thermal and commercial activities. Bourgeois houses like this bear witness to the growing prosperity of local elites, who invested in residences adapted to their social status. These buildings served as both housing and a symbol of economic success in a changing region.
