Origin and history
The Maison Les Cigognes, located in Dunkirk, is a detached house built between 1929 and 1939 within the framework of the eccentric district. This 35-house estate, designed by François Reynaert, is distinguished by its reinforced concrete architecture, an innovative material for the period. Reynaert, a native of Rosendaël, was both a decorator, inventor and public works contractor. He took on the role of architect for this project, marking his mark on the Dunkerquois urban landscape.
The house, also called Les Cicognes, was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 20 December 1988, specifically protecting its facade and roof on street. This classification underlines its heritage importance within a coherent architectural ensemble, reflecting the urban and aesthetic ambitions of the 1930s. The eccentric neighbourhood, with its modern-lined houses, bears witness to a period of reconstruction and innovation in the region.
The official address of the house, 26 rue Eugène-Dumez, is referenced in the Mérimée base under the code Insee 59183, attached to the department of the North. Although the GPS location is approximate, this monument remains a remarkable example of 20th century residential architecture, mixing functionality and creativity. No information is available on its access to the public or on any current use as a place of visit or accommodation.
