Origin and history
Marquès-Verdier House, located in Millau, Aveyron, is an emblematic example of provincial bourgeois architecture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This monument, inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 23 September 2013, reflects the way of life and social aspirations of the local bourgeoisie during this period of economic and cultural transformation. Its facades, roofs, commons, as well as its garden with its fence wall and entrance gate, have been preserved in their entirety, offering a complete testimony of this time.
The construction of the house spans two key periods: the second half of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. These dates correspond to an era of prosperity for Millau, marked by industrial and commercial development, especially around the gantry, the flagship activity of the region. The monument, now owned by a private company, thus embodies the rise of an affluent class that invests in luxurious urban residences, symbols of their social and economic success.
Ranked for its heritage value, the Marquès-Verdier House is distinguished by characteristic architectural elements, such as its open facades and carefully arranged exterior spaces. The listing of historic monuments underlines its importance in the urban landscape of Millau and its role as a witness to local history. Although the information on its access to the public (visits, rental, accommodation) is not specified, its state of conservation, considered very satisfactory, makes it a remarkable place of the Aveyron heritage.
