Origin and history
This bourgeois house, located in Cambrai in the Hauts-de-France, was built in 1922 as part of the reconstruction of the city after the destruction of the First World War. It illustrates the modernization effort while retaining stylistic references inherited from the Second Empire, as evidenced by its interior decorations combining Neo-Renaissance, Art Deco, Louis XV, Louis XVI and Art Nouveau. The building, organized in the shape of a L around a garden, was later modified by the addition of a terrace accessible by a monumental staircase.
The house embodies the modern comfort of the inter-war period, with arrangements designed for a bourgeoisie seeking prestige. Its interiors, of a great stylistic variety, reflect the decorative eclecticism of the time, where historical influences and contemporary trends coexist. Classified as a Historic Monument in 2013, it is representative of urban houses rebuilt after 1918, combining architectural tradition and innovations.
The architect Arthur Baudin, the project's master, designed a building where every detail – from woodwork to ironworks – underlines a desire to restore the pre-war fascist. The precise location, 18 rue Delphin-Dutemple, and its registration in the inventory (cadastre AP 197) attest to its heritage importance in the Cambresian urban landscape.
