Origin and history

This house, built in 1893 in Roubaix, is a rare example of apparent metal-framed architecture for private use. Made by an iron merchant, it served as both a home and a commercial demonstration for its products. The singularity of the building lies in the use of industrial materials such as cast iron, terracotta and brick, which can be seen mainly on the front façade.

Only the main façade retained its original arrangements, marked by the assembly of these materials. The metal structure, unusual for a home of the time, reflects the technical innovation and the desire for commercial promotion of its owner. The building was partially protected in 1998 with the inscription of its façade and roof on street as part of the Historic Monuments.

Located at 9 Parmentier Street, this house bears witness to the industrial boom of Roubaix at the end of the 19th century, when the city, then in full textile development, saw the emergence of hybrid constructions combining habitat and advertising function. Its current state reflects partial conservation, with a geolocalized location deemed "passable" (note 5/10) depending on available sources.
