Origin and history

The Hotel de Bretagne is an emblematic building of the city of Rennes, located in 9 Place Sainte-Anne, in the historical center. Built in 1586, it illustrates the civil architecture of the Breton Renaissance with its three floors and wood-paned facades. Its carved sandstones, especially those representing rinseaux and dated badges, bear witness to a refined craftsmanship.

The building was known in 1687 as the Hotel de Bretagne, in reference to a bourgeois family in Rennes. Previously, he was named Rat Vizé. Its designation as historic monuments in 1962 specifically protects its facade on the square and its roof, including chimney stumps. The double line of exposed beams, decorated with Renaissance motifs and shields, is a remarkable architectural element.

The hotel of Brittany is housed in a set of historic houses in Place Sainte-Anne, reflecting the urban and architectural heritage of Rennes at the end of the sixteenth century. Its state of conservation and its sculpted details make it an example of the bourgeois houses of the period, linked to the economic and cultural dynamism of Brittany under the Ancien Régime.
