Origin and history
This house, located in Tournus in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is one of the oldest still standing in the city. Some of its elements, such as the second floor window, date back to the 14th century, testifying to its medieval origin. Subsequent transformations, especially in the 15th and 18th centuries, marked its architectural evolution, while preserving traces of its past.
The first floor murals, dated from the 18th century, form a homogeneous and rare ensemble for a town house in Saône-et-Loire. These naïve-style painted decorations consist of three horizontal registers adorned with landscapes and fictitious architectures, framed by chanting motifs. Their presence illustrates the importance of interior decorations in the bourgeois dwellings of the time.
Classified Historic Monument by order of 30 September 2013, this house is protected in its entirety, including its courtyard, staircase and well. These elements, as well as the paintings, offer a valuable overview of the urban habitat in Burgundy throughout the centuries, mixing medieval heritage and beautifications of the Enlightenment.
The exact address, 45 rue de la République in Tournus, and its Insee code (71543) place it in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the heart of a region marked by a rich architectural heritage. The location, although considered poor in accuracy (note of 5/10), nevertheless makes it possible to identify this building as a key witness to local history.
