Origin and history
The Penanault House is a mansion located in Morlaix, Finistère, built between the late 16th and early 17th centuries. This stone building illustrates the prosperity of the city linked to maritime commerce at that time, while participating in the beautification of the harbour docks. Its architecture, close to aristocratic houses, suggests a high social status of its owners, while its terraced gardens, set on a rocky escarpment, reflect aesthetic and functional research.
The building could result from the extension of an earlier structure, perhaps a harbour surveillance tower, integrated into the new construction to house the stairway. Between 1782 and 1834, the house underwent major transformations, partially changing its original appearance. Classified as a historic monument since 21 June 2006, it includes the entire house, its backyard, gardens, retaining walls and stairs, all of which are now owned by a private company.
The Penanault House symbolizes both Morlaix's economic dynamism in modern times and the architectural adaptation of urban elites. Its location on the Place Charles-de-Gaulle (formerly Place du Général de Gaulle) and its terraced structure underline its integration into the harbour landscape, while marking a social distinction by its mannerist style and its landscape arrangements.
