Origin and history

The house Planeix is an artist's house-workshop located 24 bis to 26 bis of Boulevard Masséna, in the 13th arrondissement of Paris. Built between 1925 and 1928 by Le Corbusier and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, it was commissioned by the funeral sculptor and painter Antonin Planeix. This project is one of Le Corbusier's rare achievements subject to the constraints of adjoining walls, making it a unique example in his work.

In the 1930s, Planeix became an emblematic place for modern art. The painter Auguste Herbin set up his studio there and made it the seat of the Abstraction-Creation movement, which he founded in 1931 with artists such as Georges Vantongerloo, Hans Arp and František Kupka. This movement played a key role in the development of abstract art in Europe.

The facades and roofs of Planeix House were listed as historical monuments by order of 16 August 1976, thus recognizing its heritage importance. Originally, the ground floor, designed as a free plan, was finally designed to accommodate two artists' workshops and a garage, reflecting the adaptation of the project to the practical needs of its occupants.

Planeix House illustrates the collaboration between Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, as well as their innovative approach to residential and functional architecture. Its history is closely linked to major figures of art and architecture of the twentieth century, while remaining anchored in the Parisian urban context.
