Origin and history
The house located at 16 rue du Commerce in Riom is an architectural vestige of the seventeenth century, whose ground floor and first floor are the oldest preserved parts. The ground floor is distinguished by two large square bays, one of which has a carved wooden door topped by a wrought iron imposte. These elements reflect the sober yet elegant style of the mansions of the time.
On the first floor, the windows are decorated with two wrought iron balconies in Louis XIV style, characterized by curved balusters. These decorative elements, typical of the reign of Louis XIV, were protected by a registration order under the Historical Monuments on February 5, 1925. The protection specifically concerns balconies, while the facade and stairway, if they exist, also date from this period.
The location of the house, in the centre of Riom, a historic city of Auvergne, suggests its integration into an urban fabric marked by classical architecture. Although information on its original use or owners is not available, its style and protected elements reflect the importance of private hotels in French provincial cities in the 17th century. These urban residences often served as dwellings for bourgeois or noble families, reflecting their social status through careful architectural details.
