Origin and history

This house, located in Thiers, in the Puy-de-Dôme, dates from the 14th and 15th centuries, although its main facade was redesigned in the 18th century. Its most remarkable element is its entrance, keeping a sculpted tympanum characteristic of the transition to the Renaissance. This tympanum, adorned with a trilobed arch niche, houses a statuette depicting a bearded character, draped and in prayer, framed by committed columns. These architectural details reflect the desire of the owners of the era to mark their home with decorative and religious symbols.

The central tympanum niche contains a statuette of a kneeling man, his hands joined, dressed in long clothes. Under this niche, a carved shield carries a six-pointed star, a vine stock with clusters and a flower, probably related to the family owner or local activities. On both sides, two circular six-branched network openings complete this composition. These decorative elements, although after the strict medieval period, illustrate the evolution of artistic tastes towards more elaborate forms, annotating the Renaissance.

The house was partially classified as Historic Monument by order of 5 August 1963, specifically for its entrance door and tympanum. This protection highlights the heritage importance of this architectural element, a witness to the aesthetic and social transformations between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The precise address, 12 rue du Bourg à Thiers, allows to locate this monument in a historical district, although the cartographic accuracy is considered mediocre (level 5/10).
