Origin and history
The house of Villefranche-de-Conflent, classified as Historic Monument, dates from the 16th century. Its old, cut stone part includes a ground floor and a floor, while the upper floor was later redesigned or rebuilt. The windows on the first floor have also undergone modifications over time. The main entrance, located on the left, has a broken arched door without a chamfer, with a visible joint at the top. To its right, a large portal opens under a arc in a circle segment, whose interior frames are carefully chamfered.
Inside, a large room is divided into four parts by broken arches supporting the ceiling frame. This room is illuminated by a broken arched bay with a largely chamfered frame. The façade on Rue Saint-Jean, the broken arched door on Rue Saint-Jacques and the lower room opening on that same street have been protected since a registration order of 21 October 1965. The house today belongs to the town of Villefranche-de-Conflent.
The building illustrates Renaissance civil construction techniques, combining late Gothic elements, such as broken arches, with more modern forms. Its segmental arch portal and its chamfered openings bear witness to a marked craftsmanship. The location of the house, between Saint John and Santiago streets, suggests an integration into the city's medieval urban fabric, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its ramparts and military history.
