Origin and history
The Rudel du Miral house, located in Chauriat en Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a historical monument dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century. It is distinguished by its sophisticated interior decor, inspired by urban mansions of the time. What makes this place exceptional is the presence of iconographic themes related to freemasonry, a rare choice for a private residence. These symbols, commanded by Antoine Rudel de Miral, reflect a deep attachment to Masonic values, mixing the cult of nature, the duality of cosmic forces and the cyclical representation of the seasons and ages of life.
The house houses a trompe l'oeil painting depicting a library decorated with busts of philosophers and writers, as well as works of history, law and science. This set reflects the humanism of its sponsor, Antoine Rudel de Miral, and his intellectual commitment. The house, fully protected (woodworks, parquet floors, fireplaces, paintings, courtyard and gate), was listed as a Historic Monument by order of 3 December 2001. Today it belongs to the commune of Chauriat.
The originality of the Rudel du Miral house lies in the alliance between a refined decor and an explicit Masonic symbolism, making it a unique testimony to the thought of the Enlightenment in the province. The themes discussed, such as the opposition of active and passive forces or the cycle of time, illustrate a philosophical and scientific vision of the world, characteristic of the eighteenth century. This monument offers valuable insight into the cultural and spiritual aspirations of the provincial elite of the time.
