Origin and history
The house at 3 rue du Mûrier-d'Espagne in Nîmes is a civil building dating from the 4th quarter of the 18th century, although its construction was probably before 1774. The owner was certified as early as 1671, and the building then included a house and a porch, while the inner courtyard belonged to the hotel next to 15 rue des Lombards. The alignment of the façade in 1774, during work on a nearby house, confirms its existence on that date.
The interior staircase, the most remarkable element, was stylistically dated between 1740 and 1754 thanks to its silts and ironwork. Its vestibule gives access to a flight of departure adorned with hanging keys with foliage and wrought iron panels, some wearing oval medallions with intersecting anchors or monograms. The first two floors repeat a symmetrical layout for silts and ramps, while the third floor is content with a simple ramp with straight bars. The entrance gate, under a arc in a segment of a circle, is decorated with crossettes, a channel key with volutes, and angle volute pilasters.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 4 March 1964, only the wrought iron staircase (cadaster DO 1326) is protected. The property now belongs to a private company. The exact address, 3 rue du Mûrier-d'Espagne, corresponds to a narrow passage typical of the historic center of Nîmes, although GPS coordinates suggest an approximate location at the 3 Passage du Mûrier-d'Espagne. Map accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10).
