Origin and history

The Hotel des Sauvages is an iconic building located in Rouen, Seine-Maritime, listed as a historical monument since 1953. Built in the first third of the 19th century, it illustrates the plan of alignment of the constructions along the Seine. This building, spared by the post-Second World War demolitions and the 1960s-1970s, retains a southern façade marked by four cariatids representing Indians, symbols of the exchanges with the New World.

The building consists of a ground floor decorated with cariatids, a noble floor and an attic floor. Its location at the 80 quai du Havre and 2 boulevard des Belges make it a vestige of the Rouennais architectural heritage linked to the harbour history. The facades on the wharf and boulevard, as well as the corresponding roofs, were protected by decree in 1953.

The Hotel des Sauvages bears witness to the importance of transatlantic trade for Rouen in the 19th century. The cariatids, a rare decorative element, recall journeys to the Americas and the influence of maritime exchanges on local architecture. Today, privately owned, the building remains a preserved example of the urban planning of that time.
