Origin and history

The house located at 6 rue Saint-Julien in Albi is an emblematic example of the Albige civil architecture of the late 16th century. These houses, protected for their heritage value, are distinguished by their two-storey structure in corbellation, the first very prominent and the second surmounted by a souleilhé (galetas in the clear floor). Their wooden panels facades, lined with bricks laid horizontally or in oblique form, illustrate a characteristic local know-how. The street number 8 keeps a stair ramp dated 1601, showing the chronological accuracy of these constructions.

The sculptures adorning the wooden panels of one of these houses highlight their decorative richness, rare for medium-type dwellings at that time. These buildings reflect the urbanization of Albi in the Renaissance, where the influence of local materials (wood, brick) and regional constructive techniques (corbelling, souleilhe) met the needs of an expanding market bourgeoisie. Their protection by decree of 20 December 1924 (inscription of facades) enshrines their role in the Occitan architectural heritage.

Saint-Julien Street, with its aligned houses, offers a coherent overview of the Albige settlement of the late 16th century. Their uniform layout and style suggest nascent urban planning, where utilitarian aesthetics (functional woodpans) surround discreet decorative elements. These buildings, though modest, embody the transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance in the French Southwest, marking the emergence of a distinct regional architectural identity.
