Origin and history
The Tournardre house, located in the Pairie square in Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, is a rare example of 15th century medieval civil architecture preserved in Auvergne. Its almost intact facade features an entrance door whose broken arch is surmounted by an archvolt carved of oak leaves and crowned by a braid, typical of the flamboyant Gothic style. The tympanum, although wearing an empty shield, and the two pinnacles surrounding the whole bear witness to a marked decorative concern for a bourgeois home of the time.
Access to the screw staircase, adjacent to the main door, is underlined by prismatic mouldings on the footers, reflecting the influence of local workshops specialized in stone carving. The upper floors feature ground windows, while a Renaissance-style skylight, later added, pierces the roof slope. This combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles illustrates the architectural transitions in Auvergne between the Middle Ages and the modern era.
Partially classified as historic monuments since 1973 (only the door of the staircase with screws is protected), the house Tournardre embodies the civil heritage of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, a prosperous medieval village thanks to its role as commercial crossroads in the Central Massif. Its "a priori satisfactory" state of conservation (notation 6/10) and its precise address (12 Place de la Pairie) make it an accessible historical landmark, although information on its current vocation (visit, accommodation) remains unknown.
The available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) confirm its inscription under the title of Historical Monuments by decree of 22 March 1973, under the code INSEE 63038 for the commune of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, in the department of Puy-de-Dôme. No mention is made of an identified sponsor or historic owner, nor of anecdotes related to its past use.
