Origin and history

The House Verges Jacques is a medieval building located in Villefranche-de-Conflent, in the Pyrénées-Orientales, dating from the 14th century. This three-storey building (ground floor and two storeys) retains significant architectural traces despite subsequent changes. The most notable element is the frame of its front door, a slightly broken arch with a vertical joint at the top and an inner chamfer, typical of Gothic civil art of the time. The other berries have been modified over the centuries, partially erasing their original appearance.

Classified as a Historic Monument since 1965, the House Verges Jacques is protected for its facade on street and its corresponding roof (cadastre B 66). Its inscription bears witness to its heritage importance in the medieval urban fabric of Villefranche-de-Conflent, a fortified city emblematic of the Catalan Pyrenees. The precise address, rue Saint-Jean at the corner of the Rue des Remparts, places the monument in the historic heart of the city, close to the old ramparts.

Available sources, including the Merimée and Monumentum Base, highlight the architectural value of this building, while noting an approximate GPS location (5/10 according to the evaluations). No information is provided on its current use (visit, accommodation or other), but its protected status makes it a key element of local heritage, illustrating the evolution of urban habitat between the Middle Ages and modern times.
