The Gothic window on street: inscription by decree of 17 April 1935

Origin and history

The house in Sanxay, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, is a 15th-century civil building. It is representative of the medieval domestic architecture of the region, although few detailed historical elements are available about it. Its heritage interest lies mainly in its Gothic window, classified as Historic Monument by decree of 17 April 1935, which illustrates the artisanal know-how and stylistic influences of the period in Poitou-Charentes.

In the 15th century, the Sanxay region, then integrated into the Poitou, was marked by a rural and artisanal economy, centred on agriculture, livestock and local trade. The houses of this period served both as housing, as a place of work for artisans or peasants, and sometimes as a point of trade. Their construction reflected the resources available locally, such as limestone, while integrating decorative elements inspired by dominant artistic currents, such as Gothic.

These buildings played an important social role, often hosting generations or community activities.
