Façades (Case A 131): entry by order of 13 July 1926

Origin and history

The houses at 50-52 rue de la Vau-Saint-Jacques in Parthenay date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. They represent a typical example of medieval and reborn civil architecture in the Poitou-Charentes region, now integrated into New Aquitaine. Their protection as a Historic Monument, with an inscription of the facades by decree of 13 July 1926, underscores their heritage value and their role in the urban history of Parthenay.

The location of these houses in a central street of Parthenay reflects the importance of this city as a commercial and artisanal crossroads during the late medieval period and the Renaissance. At that time, bourgeois or merchant houses, often made of stone or wood, served both as a dwelling, a workshop and a place of exchange, illustrating the economic vitality of cities in western France.

Available data from sources such as Monumentum indicate that these houses are identified under Cadastre A 131. Their historic address, initially "41 rue du 14-Jullet", has evolved to correspond to the current rue de la Vau-Saint-Jacques. The accuracy of their geographic location is estimated to be "passible" (note 5/10), which may indicate minor uncertainties about their exact location in modern archives or mapping systems.
