Origin and history
The houses located at the corner of Rue Chef-de-Ville and Rue de la Grosse-Horloge in La Rochelle form an architectural set of cut stone, characterized by bosses on the ground floor. Their facade is organized in two spans on the rue de la Grosse-Horloge and three on the rue Chef-de-Ville. Inside, entirely occupied by a café, keeps a rotating wooden staircase, equipped with a central day, located in an corner of the room. This building, rebuilt in 1824, was also the subject of an elevation above the second floor, already mentioned by the historian Bishop in the late nineteenth century.
The arcade of this house was classified as Historic Monument by order of 20 June 1928, highlighting its heritage interest. The location, although documented (1 rue Chef-de-Ville), is estimated with poor accuracy (note 5/10). Available sources, including Monumentum, confirm its status as a protected building, without providing further details on its past use or potential owners.
No information is available on opening up to the public outside the current commercial activity (coffee). Internal data and photographic references, such as those of Patrick Despoix under Creative Commons license, complete the visual documentation of the monument, without adding additional historical elements.
