Facades and roofs (AK 160, 158): inscription by order of 3 May 1991

Origin and history

The houses located in Dieppe, Normandy, are part of the fortifications of the city. Their precise location, at 119 Pier Henri-IV and 2 Rue Beauregard, makes them significant elements of the historic urban landscape. These buildings, whose facades and roofs have been protected since 1991, demonstrate the strategic and architectural importance of Dieppe, the major port city in the region.

In Dieppe, as in many Normandy coastal cities, fortifications and associated dwellings played a key role in urban defence and organization. These houses, probably linked to port and military activity, illustrate the adaptation of civilian constructions to security requirements. Their preservation makes it possible today to study the construction techniques and urban planning of past times, in a context where maritime trade and fisheries structured local life.
