Vestiges de la porte romane : inscription by decree of 10 October 1929

Origin and history

The Madrerie de Saint-Gilles de Mauves, located in Beaune in Burgundy-Franche-Comté, is a 12th century monument. This type of establishment, often located on the outskirts of the cities, was used for the reception and isolation of lepers, reflecting the health and religious concerns of the medieval era. The maladries were generally founded by religious orders or local lords, playing both a charitable and a protective role for the population.

The Beaune site preserves significant remains, including a Romanesque door classified as Monument Historique by order of 10 October 1929. This protection reflects the architectural and historical importance of the site, although the information available on its detailed history or founders remains limited. The maladries, like that of Saint-Gilles, also illustrated the medieval social organization, where Christian charity and fear of contagion coexisted closely.
