Origin and history
The Malouinière de la Basse-Flourie is a typical area of Malouin architecture, located on a rectangular walled plot, with an open sea side protected by tidal foothills. The site consists of an old 17th-century mansion, an 18th-century malouinière built below, as well as landscaped gardens, a dovecote, a pool and a chapel. The ensemble illustrates a remarkable adaptation to the relief and coastal landscape, with atypical architectural elements such as a broken roof and dissymmetric facades.
The first manor house, erected around 1670 mid-slope, consisted of a house, communes, a chapel, a dovecote and a freshwater pool, all surrounded by terraced gardens. In the 18th century, a new malouinière was added lower towards the Rance, with pleasant gardens. These constructions reflect the evolution of the lifestyles of the Malouin shipowners, combining agricultural functionality, social prestige and holiday setting.
The entire estate, including facades, roofs, gardens, fence walls and hydraulic elements, was listed as historical monuments by order of 8 August 2017 (or 31 July 2017 depending on the sources). The recent restoration has preserved this rare testimony of the maritime and architectural history of Saint-Malo, while emphasizing its harmonious integration into a natural site constrained by tides.
The malouinière, a private property, embodies the heritage of the Malouin elites linked to racing and maritime commerce in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its spatial organization, with hierarchical buildings and hydraulic arrangements (living, well), reveals a technical and aesthetic mastery characteristic of the secondary residences of Breton traders of modern times.
