Hall called the Pillar Hall: inscription by order of 29 May 1940
Origin and history
The Manor House of L'Épinay-le-Comte is a building located in the town of L'Épinay-le-Comte, a commune of Passais Villages, in the Orne department in Normandy. This monument, the oldest part of which dates back to the 12th century, is distinguished by its room of pillars, also called underground room although it is actually on the ground floor. This room, composed of a line of Romanesque columns supporting arches, is a rare example of medieval civil architecture preserved in the region.
The Pillar Hall was listed as the Historic Monuments on May 29, 1940, recognizing its heritage value. Columns and capitals could come from a re-use, although there is no historical source that can reliably link them to a castle, priory or other ancient building. The construction above this hall is relatively modern, without its precise date being mentioned.
Today, the mansion houses the annex town hall of L'Épinay-le-Comte, integrating administrative use with this historic heritage. Its exact address, 19 Rue du Maine in Passais Villages, and its Insee code (61324) confirm its local anchoring in the territory of Orne. No information is available on its accessibility to the public outside its current municipal role.
