Origin and history

The Manor House of La Chapelle, located in Hotot-en-Auge in Calvados, is an emblematic 17th century building, characteristic of the architecture of the Pays d'Auge. Its house preserves an exceptional painted decor on the first floor, consisting of foliage, flowers and fruits, as well as false marbles. This decor, considered the most complete in the region, is organized around circular cartridges, with naïve landscapes added later on the original motifs.

A notable change was made to the rear façade: a turret replaced an original appentis, although this addition is not protected under the Historic Monuments. The manor house itself has been classified since 2 November 2004, excluding this turret. The same date also saw the inscription of the barn, the floors of the garden and the pit garden, highlighting the heritage importance of the whole.

The building reflects the 17th century local architectural traditions, where manor houses often served as residences for the aristocracy or the rural bourgeoisie. Their interior decoration, like that of the Chapel, reflected the social status of the owners, mixing naturalist motifs and artistic influences of the time. Partial protection of the site attests to its historical value, while distinguishing the original elements from subsequent additions.

The available sources, including Wikipedia and Monumentum, confirm the authenticity of the decorations and the history of the building. Specialized works, such as Manoirs du Pays d'Auge (1995) or Statistique monumentale du Calvados (1867), deepen its historical context, while references such as Mérimée (architectural base) and Flohic (2001) document its classification among the remarkable monuments of Calvados.
