Origin and history
The manor house of the Court, also called château de la Haute-Salle, is a Renaissance residence built around 1575-1580 on the town of Reigneville-Bocage, in the department of the Manche. This four-storey building, characteristic of the Mannerist current in Cotentin, is distinguished by its adorned bays and a turret in small brick corbellation. It embodies the architecture of Norman pleasure manors, comparable to those of Barguignerie (Saint-Christophe-du-Foc) or Graffard (Carteret), built a decade earlier.
The monument suffered partial destruction during the wars of Religion, a conflict that marked the region in the late 16th century. Despite this damage, its main structure survived, testifying to the opulence of the local elites of the time. Its designation as historic monuments in 1995 (decree of 2 October) underlines its heritage importance, particularly for its remarkable state of conservation and its role in the architectural history of Cotentin.
Located close to the old church of Saint Martin in Rauville-la-Place, the mansion is part of a dense historical landscape, where religious and seigneurial buildings coexisted closely. Its style, combining French and Flemish influences, reflects the cultural exchanges of the Renaissance in Normandy. Today, there remains an emblematic example of the rural aristocratic homes of the period, although its access and current uses (visits, accommodation) are not specified in the available sources.
