Origin and history

The Mansion de la Madeleine, located at La Madeleine in Beaumont-Hague (Manche), has its origins in the 14th century. In 1332 Raoul IV d'Argouges, husband of Thomasse de Beaumont, inherited the land and built the mansion. This site is cited as property of the family of Argouges from that date, before passing into the hands of the Jallot in the early 16th century.

The Jallot family, anobligated in 1470, received the land of Beaumont in 1505 by Jeanne de France as a reward for services rendered. Their coat of arms — from azure to silver chevron loaded with three merlets of sand accompanied by three clovers of gold — is still visible on the manor's polychrome chimney. In 1597, John II Jallot built the nearby castle of Beaumont, while his brother François inherited the mansion of La Madeleine, preserved by his descendants until 1915.

The current, square-planed mansion features architectural elements of the late Renaissance, such as canned pilasters and ionic capitals on the front door. Partially listed as historical monuments in 2003, it includes facades, roofs and a room with a decorated fireplace. The estate, sold in 1915 to Georges Jacquet, remains today a private property.

The Château de Beaumont, built in 1597 by John II Jallot, was destroyed during the fighting in 1944, unlike the mansion of the Madeleine, preserved. The weapons of the Jallot, carved in the large hall, testify to their long possession of the site, marked by almost four centuries of family and local history.
