Origin and history

The manor house of the Poissonnière, located in Saint-Ouen-en-Belin in the Sarthe, is a 14th century building. This place is mentioned in 1270 under the name Poissonneria, and tithes associated with this surname appear in cartulars as early as 1260. Former fief seigneurial, it belonged to the Cordeau family in the 14th century, before passing into the Moreau family in 1393 by the marriage of Jeanne Cordeau with Olivier 1er Moreau. The estate remained in this line for almost four centuries.

The mansion consists of a double platform surrounded by moat: the first supports the house and a chapel, while the second once housed the commons, a tower and a dovecote. This site illustrates the defensive and residential architecture typical of medieval lords. Ranked a historical monument by decree of 9 November 1977, it bears witness to local history and feudal organization in Anjou.

Available sources, including cartulars and notarial acts, confirm its economic and social importance as early as the thirteenth century. The transmission of the domain by marriage alliance reflects the inheritance practices of the nobility of the time. Today, the mansion remains a preserved example of the medieval heritage in the Pays de la Loire, accessible via heritage databases such as Mérimée.
