Origin and history
Lezaven Manor House, listed as a Historic Monument, is an architectural complex located in Pont-Aven, Brittany. It consists of a house of the 15th century, formed of two wings in return of square with a stair tower, partially redesigned in the 17th century. This main body is extended to the north by nineteenth century communes, although recent restorations have altered their original character.
In the west, a building built around 1865 housed a painter's workshop, known as the Gauguin workshop. Although Paul Gauguin stayed there twice, the mansion was mainly an inspiration for the American school of Pont-Aven, thanks to Robert Wylie, who worked there. The set also includes a courtyard with its access gate, typical of Breton manors.
The elements protected by the inscription under the Historical Monuments (Decree of 8 August 1995) include the house and the painter's workshop, the facades and roofs of the other buildings, as well as the courtyard with its gate and access road. The manor house is located at 37 rue des Abbés in Pont-Aven, Finistère, with a geographical precision deemed fair (note 5/10).
