Origin and history
The Alignés mansion is a medieval building located in La Chapelle-d'Aligné, in the department of Sarthe (Pays de la Loire). Built in the last quarter of the 15th century, it consists of a main house body on one floor, extended by outbuildings and a chapel. The ensemble rests on a medieval motte surrounded by moat, typical of the local fortifications of the era.
The house, distributed by an external staircase, has an open gable roof, while outbuildings include agricultural buildings covered with flat tiles. The chapel, of medieval origin, and the fireplace of the large hall were remodeled at the beginning of the 20th century, during which period the moat was partially recreused and the commons changed. These elements, including the chapel and fireplace, have been listed as historical monuments since 1927.
The site illustrates the seigneurial architecture of the late Middle Ages in Anjou-Maine, with traces of subsequent transformations reflecting the evolutions of agricultural and residential uses. The two juxtaposed mounds, fed by the Voutonne stream, testify to an ancient occupation, probably linked to a local defensive or symbolic system. The adjacent agricultural areas, dating back to the 16th to 19th centuries, complete this historical picture.
