Origin and history

The But Mansion is an ancient fortified house built in the late 16th century or early 17th century. Located on a rocky hillside terrace, it dominates the But River, 2 km northwest of Saint-Germain Church. Its square architecture, with a massive round tower and an extension wing, reflects its defensive character. A second round, today alaid, was once completed together.

The existence of the site is attested from the 14th century, but the current buildings date back to the 16th-17th centuries. The seigneurial mill, considered an "immemorial existence" in 1837, illustrates the economic role of the mansion. In 1983, the facades and roofs of the house and mill were listed as historical monuments, excluding recent additions such as the entrance pavilion.

The manor belongs to Dr Lefeuvre (date not specified in the sources). Its flour mill, typical of the small Norman manorial mills, bears witness to the local seigneurial organization. The 1983 partial protection covers the major historical elements, thus preserving a heritage characteristic of Lower Normandy.
