Origin and history
The Puech Bertou mansion, located in Navès in the Tarn department, dates back to its oldest parts in the 14th century. Its architecture, marked by thick walls and a circular tower housing a spiral staircase, suggests a pre-renaissance construction, probably conceived as a strong defensive house. These features recall medieval castles, where the robustness of the structures met the protection needs of the time.
Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the mansion belonged to Falc's family, a lineage that provided military and magistrates. The estate then extended over vast lands, including the so-called Blima site. After the French Revolution, the mansion became the property of the Petit Séminaire de Castres, before being acquired in 1840 by the Dougados-Calhire family. These changes of ownership reflect the political and social upheavals in the region, including the redistribution of ecclesiastical property.
The most remarkable architectural element of the mansion is its massive circular tower, which houses a particularly well-preserved spiral staircase. This staircase, typical of medieval buildings, illustrates the ingenuity of the builders of the time, combining aesthetics and functionality. Although the manor has lost its defensive role over the centuries, its structure retains tangible traces of its past, offering a valuable testimony to local history.
