Origin and history

The mansion Le Grand Rossignol is a 17th-century building located in Aviré, in the department of Maine-et-Loire, in the Pays de la Loire region. This monument, which was listed as a historic monument in 1978, has notable architectural features, such as a house body surrounded by agricultural buildings and an hors-oeuvre stair tower. The Napoleonic cadastre revealed that the property was partially smoothed, with a bassyard probably sheltering a leak.

The main house seems to date back to the late 16th century, although modifications were made in the 17th and 18th centuries, notably on the bays of the southern span and the addition of an appentis. The facades and roofs, as well as interior elements such as a screw staircase and chimneys, have been protected since 1978. The mansion thus illustrates the architectural and agricultural evolution of this region of Anjou.

The materials used, such as the tuffle stone for the bays, and the structural details, such as the foothills and the stairway tower pavilion, testify to local construction techniques. Although the sources do not specify its initial use, this type of manor was often related to the farming and residence of landowners in Anjou of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
