Origin and history

The Manor of Vertot is a building located in the commune of Terres-de-Caux (former commune of Bennetot), Seine-Maritime, Normandy. Built between the 16th and 17th centuries on an older basis, it embodies the architecture typical of the Cauchian manors, with a stone house, flint and wood panel, as well as a brick dovecote, symbol of seigneurial power. The estate has the characteristics of a wall-mature, a traditional agricultural organization in the region.

The mansion is marked by the history of René Aubert de Vertot (1655–1735), historian and academician born between his walls. A fire in the 18th century partially damaged the building, resulting in the replacement of the corbellation with a brick façade. The dovecote, dating from the 16th to 17th centuries, and the stables complete this architectural ensemble, classified Historical Monument since 1991 for its facades, roofs and houses.

The official protection concerns the house (excluding recent additions), the facades and roofs of the stables, as well as the dovecote. Today, a private property, the mansion illustrates the evolution of Norman manors, between residential, agricultural and symbolic functions. Its designation as historic monuments underscores its heritage importance in the country of Caux.

Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée database, confirm its address to Bennetot (76640 Terres-de-Caux) and its Insee code (76258). The domain remains a testament to the social and architectural dynamics of Normandy, between the late Middle Ages and the modern era.
